THE TURNBULL GOVERNMENT'S HYPOCRICY ON RENEWABLES

January 21, 2016

The Turnbull Liberal Government announced yesterday the opening of Australia’s two largest solar photovoltatic plants in Nyngan and Broken Hill, projects started under the previous Labor Government.

The Turnbull Liberal Government’s hypocrisy has reached new levels. The projects received $166.7 million in funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) in July 2013. The very agency the Liberals’ have been trying to abolish.

This project is another example of the potential renewable energy has in Australia, and the Liberals’ short-sighted approach on the issue.

Under Labor, jobs in the renewable energy sector tripled, wind power tripled, there was billions invested and households with solar roof top panels grew from 7,000 in 2007 to 1.3 million in 2014.

Under the Liberals, investment in renewables dropped 88 percent in Australia in 2014 while increasing 16 percent internationally.

The Liberals’ attack on renewables hasn’t stopped under Malcolm Turnbull. ARENA is still on the chopping block along with the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. Taxpayers’ money is still being wasted on a Windfarm Commissioner.

Only Labor has the policies to drive growth in the renewable energy sector. We will ensure 50 percent of our electricity production comes from renewables by 2030.
