SHOCKING IMPACT OF MORRISON GOVERNMENT COMPLACENCY IN AGED CARE DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAKS

November 03, 2021

The Independent Review COVID-19 outbreaks in Australian Residential Aged Care Facilities - no time for complacency report describes an aged care sector that was neglected by the Morrison-Joyce Government - often buckling under the stress of outbreaks, leaving residents malnourished, anxious and without access to the care they required.

The report found that many aged care residents ‘became dangerously deconditioned, malnourished or dehydrated because of isolation, loneliness and neglect’.

Many of the issues identified in the report, such as staffing, access to clinical care and infection control, were all well known before COVID-19 began spreading in Australia.

Scott Morrison and his Government have neglected older Australians and the aged care system for eight long years, leaving it understaffed and under-resourced.

This report, like the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and 21 other expert reports before it, has highlighted the tragic outcomes of this neglect.

And just like the Government did with the Royal Commission’s final report, they have sought to avoid responsibility and accountability for their failures. They have sat on this report since April and slipped it out when the Prime Minister was overseas and on a day where Australians’ attention was elsewhere.

Older Australians, their families and hardworking carers can’t trust Scott Morrison to fix his broken system.

Unlike the Coalition, aged care has and always will be a priority for Labor.

After eight long years of neglect, it’s clear that another three years of Scott Morrison won’t fix aged care.
