At 10:30pm last night Department of Health Officials revealed 27,278 Australians have died while waiting for a Home Care Package that had been approved in the last two and a half years.
During the first half of 2020/21 officials advised that 4,722 older Australians died while waiting for Home Care the Government had formally approved.
Officials also confirmed the huge waiting list for home care still sits at 96,859 people.
This Government has neglected the entire aged care sector and these shameful statistics show no progress on essential home care.
Last night’s revelations come as senior Department of Health Officials also acknowledged that funding for residential aged care services had not kept up with the rate of aged care provider costs.
Health officials acknowledged the Government funding decisions in 2016/17 and since these have contributed to financial pressures now experienced by many aged care homes.
Health Department Secretary Professor Brendon Murphy, acknowledged that “obviously it will contribute to that” and “they are one of the factors” in regards to current financial pressure faced by providers.
Since the 2016/17 budget cuts to the sector, when Scott Morrison was Treasurer, the average operating position of residential aged care providers has gone from a $12 per bed per day surplus to a $10-a-day loss, according to the aged care sector report by chartered accounting firm StewartBrown.
Prime Minister Morrison and Ministers Hunt and Colbeck have neglected older Australians and the aged care system.
They introduced aged care cuts in 2016/17 and since then avoidable hospitalisations in aged care have escalated, sexual assaults and other assaults in aged care have grown alarmingly and the operating position of residential providers has worsened.
The Morrison Government cannot be trusted to fix aged care.
Older Australians built this country. They and their families deserve so much better than this.
Only a Labor Government can be trusted to get aged care right. We will always be on your side.
