GOVERNMENT’S FAILED INDIGENOUS VACCINATION ‘SURGE’ LEAVES COMMUNITIES AT RISK

November 18, 2021

The First Nations vaccination gap has widened again, leading to new COVID outbreaks in remote parts of the Northern Territory and Moree.

The Government’s failure to deliver vaccines to communities has left them exposed as more border controls ease in the coming days and weeks.

Health experts, Labor and First Nations leaders have consistently warned the Government of the consequences of COVID outbreaks in remote communities for almost two years.

Those warnings came true with COVID outbreaks in First Nations communities in West and Far West NSW.

This should have been a wake-up call for the Government. But it wasn’t, and the months they’ve wasted since are now having real consequences.

COVID is a threat to culture, to language and to the elders who keep that knowledge.

Overcrowded housing, remoteness and higher levels of underlying illness means First Nations people are particularly vulnerable.

The Government promised First Nations people would be at the front of the queue – and vaccinated by winter. Instead, they have yet again been left behind.

The national vaccination gap is still widening. The Government’s plan to increase vaccination in just 30 communities hasn’t turned that around.

Their failure to get vaccines to communities or provide a clear and consistent message about vaccination left has left communities exposed as Australia opens up.

The message for communities in clear: COVID won’t be kept out forever. While the Government has let you down by not making sure your community was vaccinated, now that COVID is on the doorstep, protect your family and community and get vaccinated.
